Video Critiques

Katie – A little fast spoken

A lot of “sprout fund” logo shots in beginning

A little fast with the ken burns sometimes

Great images of people actually painting the murals

                        Awesome specific examples

Patrice – Love the song!

However, turn it down a little maybe, and raise your vocals..

            Pictures a little of focus

A lot of the same pictures

Julie – awesome pictures showing the process

            Music up a little.

            Adjust audio

And obviously video audio needs tweeking

Jenna – Talking super fast

Really fast moving pictures (little choppy)

Good match up with some of the visual with the audio & good quotes

More photos of the actual decorated doors in Oakland?

Ariel – allowed to use that many pictures that aren’t your own?

Less global – you know that

Good shots of inside of south side tattoo – fact you talked to guy is a good thing – shots of people getting them done, looking for what they want – good

Didn't get to hear audio with visual like it will be in the end - so can't judge that

Emily – no music while talking? Little grainy with the voice anyway

A little fast with the pictures.

            AWESOME title effects

            Spelled sponsored wrong

Gillian – really super low audio

            What is your topic?

I think you used interviews – which is good

A lot of music visualizer – find other images maybe?

Sarah – nice drawings of cathedral for design plan

                        Good statistics

Up on the audio – music?

            Images moving a little fast

Good interview voice behind with video&audio

            Ending?

In Class Critiques

Katie:

Great colorful pictures, interesting narrative

Slow down some of the pictures, match some of narratives to pictures more, filter sound so its clearer

Patrice:

Great soundtrack, cool videos of water!

Make narrative louder than sountrack-hard to hear, provide more background on fountains, pictures a bit fuzzy

Colleen:

Great music, pictures, transitions are smooth

Make narrative louder, perhaps pictures of the artists would add to the movie, need more of a variety of pictures

Julie:

Cool transitions, great pictures that show the actual process

Fix sound problem, end movie, a bit too many transition effects

Ariel:

Awesome pictures, interesting facts on history of tattoes

pictures are a bit fast-slow down, add transitions, focus on pittsburgh

Emily

Great titles and transitions

make audio more clear, pictures are kind of hard to read, maybe include a sountrack throughout the piece instead of just at beginning and end

Gill:

Videos really add to the video, cool soundtrack, awesome music visualizer!

make sound louder-hard to hear, make clearer transitions, cut spaces are too far apart

Sarah:

great background info and history on the cathedral, awesome video of fireworks, great voiceover interview

make sound louder, add transitions, fix ending

Video Critiques from Sarah

Katie
Love: pictures of the murals and the history explanation about them
Improve: slow down the speed of the pictures, try to match some of the pictures to the words better, add a music soundtrack

Patrice
Love: the music and the quote were awesome
Improve: try to make the pictures clearer, slow down your pictures, balance out the sound

Colleen
Love: the transitions were awesome and your photos were cool
Improve: possibly slow down the transitions, balance the sound a bit better

Julie
Love: awesome pictures
Improve: possibly show more variety of art on the buses, possibly vary the transitions, I don't know if you have more pictures at the bs depot but if you do it would be neat to see more of those

Jenna
Love: the pictures you have are very cool and well framed
Improve: slow down your speech, slow down your images, add a music soundtrack

Ariel
Love:visual pictures you have are really neat
Improve: balance out the sound, slow down the pictures so we can see the art, have more pictures from pittsburgh of people getting tattoos if you have them

Emily
Love: the variety of topics you covered was so informative
Improve: try to have clearer images of the chalk art-I know it is hard to get but that would be cool, more shots in action would be really neat-but that must be hard to find, keep the music that you start with throughout the piece-just make it softer

Gill
Love: the music visualizer images were so cool
Improve: adjust the sound levels, figure out what to do with the black space between clips, have a music soundtrack

In-Class #17 - Gill

Katie

I love the many pictures of the murals –they’re gorgeous and the contrast against the blank wall. Your information was really cool!

Flashes through pictures very quickly – made my eyes hurt!

Show a picture of the guy you’re quoting?

Sound of your voice is very tinny

Patrice

I love how well your pictures and your words go together – very well planned.

Great shots of fountains, perhaps get more running clips?

Your voice is a tad hard to understand – the voice is tinny and the music covers you up quite a bit.

Pictures are kind of fuzzy and feel repeated.

Colleen

Great shots and transitions for your information.

Perhaps turn down the music a little – it kind of over powers you a tad.

More moving? I know it’s about still shots, but perhaps a photographer at work?

Flip through pictures a little too quickly

Julie

Awesome shots and clips of the contrasts between the many buses and how they do things.

Tell us why this is important to us as Pittsburghers.

Turn up the music a little?

You know you have to get rid of the ambient noise

Jenna

Beautiful, beautiful shots and really interesting information on doors in oakland

Good background information on doors, but what argument are you making?

Ambient noise needs to dragged down – you’re really loud and are speaking really quick!

Flip through your pictures very quickly. Slow down some! When you fix your voice, you’ll have to get rid of some time/pictures.

Ariel

Flashing through the pictures really fast.

Awesome information and excellent shots, really really cool.

Concentrate more on Pittsburgh, but you know that

You say a lot about how the history is long, but what’s the argument? What does the long history mean about how we should perceive tattoos?

Emily

Your voice sounds really tinny.

So what’s your argument, really? Why do they want to influence people?

Excellent shots of the chalk and matching it up with your words.

Your transition slides are cool, but maybe spice them up a bit?

Sarah

Good history on the cathedral… is this about the cathedral itself or about the light show?

There’s an awful lot of ‘architect’ shots and maybe just too many pictures of the cathedral?

Great, great interview! That’s really cool!

Could you get a picture of him?

MME loves and critiques

Good transitions and images!!---capture emotion of with music
1)Make soundtrack quieter

2) New Works gallery—images of the photographs, not just the gallery
3) try to get rid of gradation in photos

1) Use text to label the different types of advertisements on buses

3) Fix video audio situation

Good images!!!
1) End with focal points on the doors, not windows
2) Subliminal messages/ images flashes? Look to take those still outs

Video Suggestions by Hannah Pilling

These videos are AWESOME! STOP DOUBTING YOUR PIECES! THEY'RE REALLY GOOD!

Katie Capri

LOVE:
Very good explanation of the process and line up of the voiceover with certain pictures
SUGGESTIONS
1. STOP THE KENS BURNS
2. SERIOUSLY STOP THE KEN BURNS. Slow down the movement of the pictures
3. Weed out unnecessary pictures so that you can slow down the movement and so that the viewer has the ability to focus.

Patrice

LOVE:
The music perfectly compliments the mood that you are discussing. You talk about how the fountains creates a soothing feeling.
SUGGESTIONS
1. make the sound track quieter.
2. You say that moving water is … for the human senses. But the picture is one of the few non moving pictures
3. The images are all the same. Are there any other fountains other than the Carnegie Museum of Art one and the one in front of frick?

Colleen

LOVE
Incorporation of varying types of pictures. Pictures of silver eye. Art photos. Ect. The intro was great and develops a story!!!! Awesome job
SUGGESTIONS
1. Make the soundtrack quieter and your voice louder!
2. Figure out something to do with the vertical pictures. Add a border or something on photoshop so that the screen shot is actually horizontal but the picture your focusing on is horizontal. I don’t know. If your confused please let me know.
3. Slow down the ken burns

Julie

LOVE
Great way of showing the process. This is something no one really thinks about and you do a great job with the documentary aspect of it.
SUGGESTIONS
1. completely delete the sound on the video so that the voice over is the only sound.
2. Maybe use text saying “King kong” or the different advertising choices to add another visual aspect. You can use cool fonts and ect to do this to reflect the advertising on the bus.
3. I think the title page and introduction into the subject could be a little slower

Jenna

LOVE
You have done an awesome job researching
SUGGESTION
1. I don’t know if you can fix this but the most commonly used techniques for essays and the like is the use of a definition to introduce your subject. In the future, consider not using this. Everyone does it, no worries. It’s just something I learned.
2. Music or something to separate all of the talking
3. Maybe try matching up the pictures to what your talking about

Ariel

LOVE
The personal incorporation of your friend and the personal connection to the tattoo artist on the southside. That’s
SUGGESTIONS
1. Too much time spent on the background. Assume people know about tattoos if they are watching your video
2. Don’t forget that this is supposed to be exposing this as an art form, not the history. If this video could have been longer it would have been awesome to include all of this
3. Do some transition from the history to the Pittsburgh one. This isn’t referring to your other transition.

Emily

LOVE
The question answer technique works out very well for you.
SUGGESTIONS
1. your pictures are a little over exposed. This can be fixed either in photoshop or the video editing software
2. find some way to bring your viewers focus to the part of the picture that you want them to see since chalk is really hard to see.
3. Personally, I think that the font you use decreases the seriousness of the video. But that might just be because I’m a font addict.

Jill

LOVE
I like the visual depiction of what people were feeling and the visual translation of the music into the visualizer. That’s art!
SUGGESTIONS
1. increase the volume of the voiceover
2. during the videos of the people you tested there’s plenty of space for some text or something to further prove your argument
3. find someway either through transitions or something to connect all of these pieces. The voiceover flows well now make the visuals flow like that! You’re very close.
4. Your still talking at the end while your credits are running. Are you saying that the conclusion isn’t important? See if there’s something you can edit out during the middle part. That’s your argument!

Sarah

LOVE
You did the voice over with the guy the best! His voice is nice and loud and the visuals are great! (You should take out the background music of the firework show though and add your own soundtrack)
SUGGESTIONS
1. Straighten the blueprint picture. You can do this in photoshop or any image editing software.
2. Your images are all very bright.
3. You should separate the sections [pre-cathedral, building, ect.]
