Dispersion and networking. Think about things that are total but are not composed through transitions and linearity.
It is important to realize that Lonelygirl15 was originally viewed in segmented pieces as they were being created. This is significantly different than how the class viewed the story in that, when it was first being viewed, people thought that it was real. Conversely, when compiled together with all of the layers and pieces, the class knew that the story was fictional. When people thought that it was real it was a network of different people who posted videos in conversation form in reaction to Bre’s videos. This is the connection in network form of different participants creating a single story. You can understand that these people have their own backgrounds and stories but when connected together (even before they physically came together) they were creating one narrative. Week by week a video from a different character would be posted. Unlike viewing them all at once, you had to connect the story being presented by one person to the story presented by another. The inclusion of the Opaphid videos was another layer that was added based off of a video game or virtual reality created by the viewer. This type of viewer involvement and viewer creation extended the web while still maintaining the linear relationship.
With patchwork girl there is no time line. Conversely, Lonely girl work towards an ending. The Op aphid videos are a secondary narrative within the main narrative. While they do not follow the time line of the rest of the videos, when viewed collectively they fit into the linear narrative.
Patchwork girl the narrative is created and determined by how you interact with it. The story is not set. With lonely girl, although there is variation in how you can approach the videos, the narrative is pretty much set out.
